CEPA GALLERY PRESENTS RARE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBIT BY PIONEER FILMMAKER HOLLIS FRAMPTON.
First comprehensive gallery exhibition and sale of artist’s work since 1984.
CEPA Gallery, in partnership with Dean Brownrout Modern/Contemporary, is honored to announce an exhibition and sale of photographic artwork by artist Hollis Frampton. The event takes place June 20-September 5, 2015 at CEPA Gallery, 617 Main Street, Buffalo, New York.
The exhibition and sale is the first comprehensive survey of the late artist’s print work in over 30 years. Many pieces in the exhibit have never been presented in a gallery setting.
Hollis Frampton (1936-1984) is an avant-garde icon—a pioneering filmmaker, art theorist, and photographer. He was on the SUNY Buffalo Department of Media Study faculty from 1973-1984.
His photographs are held in many important collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Walker Art Center, Anthology Film Archives, and Harvard University, among others. The MoMA is the repository of his motion picture archive.
In recent years, Frampton has received renewed notice. A 2012 two-disc DVD set of his films—released by the prestigious Criterion Collection—has furthered this resurgence on an international level.
CEPA director Sean Donaher said, “CEPA is privileged to present this event. Frampton’s influence on the art world continues to grow. This exhibition could easily be taking place in New York or Los Angeles. We feel it is important to offer the exhibit in Buffalo, where he created some of his most impactful work. ”
Said Buffalo-based art dealer Dean Brownrout, “The significance of this exhibition and sale can’t be overstated. In the early planning stages, we’ve already heard from national and international art dealers, galleries, and collectors. This is a rare opportunity to view and purchase this estate-provenance artwork.”
Included in the exhibit are early photos by Frampton of his artist friends and roommates. While living in New York City in the late 1950s and early ‘60s, he made candid portraits of Larry Poons, James Rosenquist, Frank Stella, and others—before any of them ascended to their place on the artistic world stage.
In addition, added Donaher, “In the coming weeks, we will announce simultaneous supporting exhibits of Frampton’s films and correspondence, which will be presented in collaboration with area arts organizations. This will be an exceptional, community-wide celebration of the multidisciplinary work and legacy of Hollis Frampton.”
