Carolee Schneemann is a multidisciplinary artist who has transformed the very definition of art especially with regard to discourse on the body, sexuality and gender. Her video, film, painting, photography, performance art and installation works have been widely shown in the United States and Europe. She has exhibited at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Her work is in the collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Ludwig Collection in Austria, the Placido Arango in Spain, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2002, the MIT Press published her book, Imaging Her Erotics-Essays, Interviews, Projects. Schneemann was showcased in a dual-site retrospective at CEPA Gallery and Toronto MOCCA in March of 2007. The resulting catalogue Split Decision has been picked up for distribution by Distributed Art Publishers. Carolee Schneemann was the the winner of the 2017 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of the 57th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia – VIVA ARTE VIVA. My work is inspired by the ecstatic perceptual powers within dailiness lived at the crossroads of contemporary suppressions, militarisms and censorship. I pay attention to the direction of unconscious information. There has always been something irrepressible in my concepts. I believe in the pure thrust of intuition, trust of the body. My body’s central position in my art has consistently revealed contradictions in our culture. I resist social, erotic and aesthetic restraints, and have opened my energies to finding materials and forms, which celebrate and transcend predicted directions of the work.
