BIO: Cindy Sherman was born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, and lives and works in New York. Considered one of the most influential artists of her generation, she came to prominence in the late 1970s with a group of artists known as the Pictures Generation. She has been the recipient of the Praemium Imperiale, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, and a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.
STATEMENT: Sherman uses photography to investigate the construction of identity, working as her own model, costumer, make-up artist, and hairstylist to create carefully articulated, singular characters and tableaux drawn from images from art history, mass media, and popular culture. Sherman’s work considers how settings, material effects, poses, and expressions can come together to communicate complex notions such as gender, status, aging, aspiration, abjection, and the grotesque.
