BIO: A Brooklyn-based artist for the last 25 years, Keith Gemerek began his photographic endeavors in Buffalo in the ’70s as a photo-historian working with Anthony Bannon. Inspired by Buffalo’s photo-pictorialists, Gemerek began to photograph the people in his own world. In 1981, he began a commercial photography career in New York; he now devotes his work to artistic and documentary endeavors. Major projects have included portraits of Buffalo’s late Yvar Mikhashoff and his associated composers, the Radical Faeries, the Cockettes, the elders of Buffalo’s gay community and New York City’s downtown performance artists.

STATEMENT: This is a photograph Gemerek shot of performance artist Connie Schulz when she was performing in an alley between buildings while reciting “Renasence” a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay, in the late ’70s in Buffalo.
