BIO: Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds received his M.F.A. from Tyler School of Art, Temple University and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts Degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Museum of the American Indian (New York), the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney), documenta, and the Venice Biennale, among many others. A professor of Native American studies at the University of Oklahoma since 1988, he has received grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Pew Charitable Trust, the Andy Warhol Foundation, and many others.
STATEMENT: Drawing on the historic use of text in traditional Native art and its complex and satirical outlook, from the inside to the outside, I employ words as a visual, rhythmic and secret code that originates in personal events.
